The Electrifying Mojo

A small clip from the Electrifying Mojo's show on WGPR in '84. Some pretty cool tunes there. I'm going to be trawling the internet for playlists etc. as at the time I was unfortunate enough to be 3 years old and living in rural Berkshire, so largely missed out on this one.

Frederick Knight - Let Me Ring Your Bell Again

This is an interesting little follow up to Anita Ward's 1978 hit "Let Me Ring Your Bell". The original was written and produced by Frederick Knight, who also released his own version on Juana in '78.
I spotted this in a boogie/funk mix which turned up on dubstepforum, of all places.

Midnight Express - Danger Zone

At the beginning of October I went down to Deviation for their 1st birthday. Dam Funk was headlining. I have to say I hadn't been massively into his stuff before, but that night blew me away. Lots of amazing tunes from a period I usually write off (1980 - 1985).
This was one of the big ones from that night, along with the RAH Band's "Messages from the Stars". That one got 4(!) rewinds. Watch this space for my version which i've been working on for some month's now...

OV Wright - This Hurt Is Real

I picked up this nice little 7" at Sounds that Swing in Camden, a gem of a record shop tucked away behind Inverness Street market. I don't think it stocks much recorded after 1969.

Ikettes - Your Love is Mine

I thought I'd kick off the Claws For? blog with this nice little number from Ike & Tina's backing band. The beat is really raw, and has that lolloping rhythm so beloved of underground hiphop producers at the moment. The vocals and backing harmonies are simply so strong, they needed very little ornamentation.

As far as I know the original 7" is pretty rare - I've certainly had no luck tracking it down - but fortunately it's available on a Kent compilation from '87.
